Grilled fish — the plate Enfield chip shops are selling, even when the shopfront photo is missing

Enfield does not smell like a harbour. It smells like a fryer on South Street at 6pm. A restaurant with fish in Enfield is that counter: cod, skate wing, or rock with chips. If you came for oysters and a view, take the train and use the London seafood hub. Stay in the borough for the chippy list — four shops do almost all of the reputation.

!The plate, not a shopfront Most Enfield fish bars never stored a kitchen photo we can legally show. The plate is the honest stand-in until those covers land.

The restaurant with fish in Enfield that leads the list

Marys Supreme Fish Bar is 2 South Street, Ponders End, EN3 4JZ. 4.8 from 607 reviews. No website on the listing. That is normal for this end of the borough: the Google pin is the menu. Cod and haddock both come out of the same fryer; cod is what north London asks for first. Haddock is the Yorkshire habit, and it is the wrong expectation here.

A few streets of habit away, Sea Shell Fish Bar is the other EN counter people mix up with Marys. Same problem: the stored photo was a Google hotlink that died, so the card was a blank navy box. The image below is a food still we attached so the listing is readable — it is not a photograph of their shop.

Southbury Road is a different queue

The Original George’s Fish Bar is 8 Savoy Parade, Southbury Road, EN1 1RT. 4.5 from 445 reviews. Rock and skate show up in the way people talk about this counter — thicker, bonier, more “Friday” than a plain cod. Their site exists; it did not give us a photograph worth printing, only a logo. Use the listing for the map.

!Cod and chips Thick white fish is the Enfield order. Species notes, if you want them before you queue: [Atlantic cod](/fish-guide/atlantic-cod).

What goes wrong: asking for “haddock like Leeds” and then being annoyed it isn’t the house fish. Or arriving at 8:45 and finding the last skate already gone. These shops are not restaurants with a pass. When the board says sold out, it means sold out.

If you want a chair

Two rooms, not a list of eight clones.

The Blue Mermaid is 147 Chase Side, EN2 0PN — 4.4 from 223 reviews. Grilled fish and a supper you sit for. Chase Side is the walkable bit; Ponders End is the bag.

Jim's Traditional Fish & Chips is 152 Ordnance Road, EN3 6DL — 4.3 from 162 reviews. Portions and mushy peas are the reason the listing exists. Their ordering site is a logo tile, not a gallery, so we are not pretending we have their interior.

Sushi, then home

The borough is not only chippies. Haya Sushi Enfield and Jin's Sushi Seafood & Bar are the “I’m not eating chips” exits. Filter them on the city page instead of treating them as a second chippy ranking.

Cook at home after a fishmonger run and the pages that help are Spanish grilled sea bass and moules marinière. Billingsgate is the wholesale pilgrimage; it is not required for a Tuesday cod.

Walk it off at Trent Park or along the New River if you are already in the borough. Neither walk changes who is 4.8 on South Street.

Next in this series, not published yet: a dish guide (cod, skate, rock) and a top 5 taken only from the live Enfield ranking. The city page stays the full list.
