Miami restaurants on the water are not only Miami Beach ocean terraces. The commercial search often means Biscayne Bay, the Miami River, and Coconut Grove decks where boats, mangroves, and downtown light do the scenery work — and seafood still has to show up on the plate.

Bay, river, Grove

Biscayne Bay tables look at downtown and at the water you actually boat on. The Miami River is narrower, more working dock than postcard, and the kitchens nearby often cook for people who eat fish on weeknights. Coconut Grove is the mangrove and Dinner Key version: slower, leafier, and easy to mistake for a cocktail patio if you do not read the menu.

The same rules apply in all three. Name the fish. Ask whether the snapper is whole or a fillet that could have been frozen. Ceviche should be cut to order or at least the same day. A sweet mango pile on top of soft fish is a brunch trick, not a lunch.

Weather decides the table. A west-facing bay deck in July is a sunset and a sweat. An inside table with the same kitchen is the better meal if you came for the fish. Storms cancel waterfront service with little notice. Check the hours on the listing the day you go.

If you only remember one split: the Beach is an ocean terrace, these three are bay, river, and Grove. Start in the Miami city guide, then match the neighbourhood to the water you actually want to sit beside.

Storms shut decks with an hour's notice. Have an inside table in mind at the same restaurant, or a second room inland, before you promise someone a sunset. The fish order does not change. The chair does.
